Studies Programs of Social Studies Education, Civic Education, and History Education (School of Post-Graduate Studies & Faculty of Social Studies Education), Indonesia University of Education (Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia) in collaboration with the University of Bath, Bath, United Kingdom, and sponsored by Bandung: Journal of the Global South (Springer Open), will organize International Conference on “The Commemorative Academic Conference for the 60^th Anniversary of the 1955 Asian-African Conference in Bandung, Indonesia”. The conference will be convened on 4 – 6 June 2015 at Gedung Merdeka and Indonesia University of Education campus.

Conference Rationale

1955 has always been a most remarkable moment in contemporary world affairs. On18-24 April 1955, delegates from the newly independent states of Africa and Asia arrived at Bandung, Indonesia. Attempting to create a new world order after centuries of colonialism and imperialism, the Asia-Africa conference successfully gathered the state representatives from 25 countries of Asia and Africa. The Bandung conference then gave births to the Afro-Asian People’s Solidarity Conference in Cairo of Egypt (1957) and the Belgrade Conference (1961) in Yugoslavia, which formalized the Non-Aligned Movement in 1961. As of 2012, the Non-Aligned Movement had gathered a robust membership of 120 member-countries and 17 observer-countries, all from Asia, Africa, Europe and Latin America as well as the Oceania.

During the 1^stCold War (1950s – 1980s) when the Soviet-led Eastern bloc competed for the allegiances of the Global South states against the US-led Western bloc, the Asian, African and Latin American states and societies continued to find themselves haunted by such structural problems of dependency, neo-colonialism, wars, putsches and economic deprivations as well as foreign control. Basic human rights protections in terms of social welfare, housing, food, education and health care had not been ensured.

In the year of 2014, despite the general well-beings in the Global South have seemingly improved, the struggles between the East and West continued. Following the annexation of Crimea, the ensuing Ukrainian crisis, the rise of the Islamic State of Iraq and the Levant (ISIS), the plummeting oil price and the depreciations of various major currencies have signaled that the land of Eurasia has been put back under the shadow of a new Cold War. While ideological divisions seem to be less relevant in this2^ndCold War, the largest land power – Russia is seemingly joined by a rising China which has pivoted to as far as Latin America, posing themselves as a new Eurasian bloc versus the US-led Western bloc.

At this critical juncture, since his 2013 visit to Indonesia, President Xi Jin ping of China has gradually launched the ‘Silk Road Economic Belt’ and the ‘Maritime Silk Road’ initiatives, known as the ‘Belt & Road’ initiatives. Such overarching strategy attempts to forge multiple trans-continental railway networks, telecommunication networks, economic and trade corridors, transnational pipelines, trans-oceanic strings of hub of natural resources and alternative energies, sea ports, new international financial and monetary institutions, all-rounded human security cooperation, and, cultural-scientific collaborations together across time and space into one pillaring ‘national security’ agenda of sustainable development for China and the Global South.

In the midst of such major geo-political shifts, the 2015 Bandung conference aims to re-gather scholars and practitioners from the Global South to renew past connections and rebuild solidarity in order to remake their own destinies.

Conference objective

The 2015 Bandung conference invites panel and paper proposals in any fields of humanities and social sciences pertinent to the Global South. In line with the Non-Aligned Movement’s geographical coverage, the idea of Global South for the 2015 Bandung conference includes all the states and societies in Africa, Asia, Europe, Latin America and Oceania.

Submission of Panel Proosals, Paper Abstract and Papers

Interested individuals may submit panel proposals and individual paper abstracts (250 words) to the conference secretary’s email address: 2014.bandung@gmail.com by 26April 2015 for consideration. Panel proposals should include paper abstracts and panel members’ affiliation details. Once a proposal and an abstract will be accepted, paper presenters may submit full papers for consideration of publication by Bandung: Journal of the Global South (www.bandungjournal.com) after the conference.

Full papers may be in two forms. First is ‘Research Paper’ of maximally 8,000 words (including references and notes). Second is ‘Concept Paper’ of around 3,000 words (including references and notes). Full papers should be submitted by 30 June 2015. Whereas the former type should be an original research contribution to the intended field of studies, the latter type may just be experimental discussions, reviews and agenda-setting explorations which may (or may not) lead to a full research paper later.

Citation and referencing styles should be prepared in accordance with the Chicago Manual of Style. Submitted papers will be considered for publication in Bandung: Journal of the Global South.
