Crafting Scopus-Ready Articles: A Workshop for the Publication in the areas of Linguistics, English Education, and Literature

In today’s competitive academic landscape, publishing research in high-impact journals is crucial for career advancement and scholarly recognition. Scopus, a renowned abstract and citation database, has become a gold standard for measuring research quality. To equip researchers with the necessary skills to navigate this competitive landscape, the English Language and Literature Study Program of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia organized a two-day workshop on article writing as part of Community Service Project.

The workshop, held on May 17 and May 31, 2024, at the FPBS Building of Universitas Pendidikan Indonesia, attracted a diverse group of participants from various universities in Bandung. The primary objective was to provide comprehensive guidance on crafting articles that meet the stringent requirements of Scopus-indexed journals. The workshop focused on three specific areas: linguistics, English language teaching, and literature.

The workshop coordinator R. Dian Dia-an Muniroh, M.Hum., Ph.D. in her opening speech mentioned  the results of the research conducted by Macháček and Srholec (2021) indicate that Kazakhstan and Indonesia ranked in the top two positions for publications in predatory journals from 2015-2017. This community service project will be carried out as an effort to enhance international publication productivity and to help reduce the prevalence of publications in predatory journals, which continues to be a significant issue in the academic publishing world.

A distinguished panel of experts led the workshop, sharing their invaluable insights and experiences. Prof. Eri Kurniawan, M.A., Ph.D., a seasoned academic with expertise in rhetorical structure, served as one of the primary presenters delivering materials on writing abstract and preparing for submission. R. Dian Dia-an Muniroh, M.Hum., Ph.D., a renowned researcher in forensic linguistics, contributed her knowledge on crafting compelling introduction. Susi Septaviana, M.Pd., Ph.D., an expert in language teaching and translation studies, provided practical guidance on writing results and discussion. Dr. Ruswan Dallyono, M.Pd., a prominent scholar in mathematical and computational linguistics, enriched the workshop with his expertise on writing methods and conclusion.

Initially, over 100 participants registered for the workshop. After a careful selection process, 20 individuals were chosen based on their research proposals and potential for success. The workshop was structured to provide a comprehensive understanding of the article writing process, involving presentation and group consultation on the rhetorical structuring of the main body of the article into logical sections and paragraphs.

The workshop received overwhelmingly positive feedback from participants. Many expressed that the sessions were informative, engaging, and provided valuable insights into the article writing process. The expert guidance and practical exercises helped participants develop a deeper understanding of the requirements for Scopus-indexed journals.

Several participants reported that they had already begun working on their research articles after the workshop and felt more confident in their ability to meet the standards of high-quality academic publications. Some participants even shared that they had successfully submitted their articles to Scopus-indexed journals based on the knowledge gained from the workshop.

The success of this workshop highlights the need for ongoing support and training in article writing. Based on the positive outcomes, several recommendations can be made for future initiatives:

  • Consider expanding the workshop to include additional topics, such as grant writing or ethical considerations in research.
  • Provide opportunities for participants to receive ongoing mentoring and support after the workshop, such as through online forums or workshops.
  • Partner with other universities or research institutions to offer similar workshops on a larger scale.
  • Advocate for open-access publishing to ensure wider dissemination of research findings.

The workshop on crafting Scopus-ready articles provided invaluable guidance and support to researchers in the fields of linguistics, English education, and literature. By equipping participants with the necessary skills and knowledge, the workshop contributed to the advancement of scholarly research and publication. As the academic landscape continues to evolve, such initiatives are essential for fostering a culture of excellence and innovation.
