Guest Lectures: Dr. Bert J. Tuga, President of Philippine Normal University, Gives a Lecture to UPI Postgraduate Students

Dr. Bert J. Tuga, the President of Philippine Normal University, gives lectures in regards to ‘Global Citizenship Education and Teacher Leadership’ for UPI Postgraduate students, Thursday, February 27th, 2020 at UPI School of Postgraduate Conference Room 6th floor.

Dr. Bert J. Tuga explained in his lecture that the development of technology has many impacts on human life in this modern era. Technology makes the world that was initially so vast and blocked by distance become smaller and run in real-time.

“The changes in the structure and composition of our society lead us to changes in our concept of citizenship. Old views of citizenship education mostly revolve around nationalism or national identity; what is a good citizen, while our society is now evolving to broader beyond national borders, we are global citizenship,” said Dr. Bert J. Tuga in his lecture.

The aims of Global Citizenship Education (GCED) is to empower students to participate in overcoming global challenges and actively contribute to a more peaceful, tolerant, inclusive and safe world. GCED intended for students of all ages – children, adolescents, and adults. GCED is one of the strategic fields of the UNESCO Education Sector program.

              He explained how educators in schools should implement the strategy on how the school approach to global citizenship. The school must encompass four interconnected areas: curriculum, teaching and learning, effective leadership, awards, initiatives, and extra-curricular activities, and community connections.

Dr. Bert J. Tuga also explained some instructional Practices of Teacher Leaders that Promote GCED are; giving students agency (ownership and empowerment), building relevance, connecting to networks beyond the classroom, supporting collaboration, assessing and providing feedback, differentiates for diverse learners, developing critical thinking, and promoting empathy.(Ghina Aulia Saffanah)
